Water Ingress is one of the most common motorhome dilemmas, here are some of our top tips to preventing damp

Preventing damp in a motorhome is crucial to maintaining its condition and ensuring a comfortable living space. Dampness can lead to mould, unpleasant odors, and structural damage.

Damp is not always obvious to spot, however some quick tell-tale signs of damp in your motorhome may be a musty smell or black spots appearing near to windows or doors. As a motorhome owner damp is something that should remain on your radar, think of a motorhome as a house on wheels!

Here are steps you can take to avoid damp in your motorhome:

Regular Inspections:

Our biggest advice is to keep up to date with your routine water ingress checks. At Southdowns we have a fantastic team of motorhome technicians that are fully qualified to perform a damp check with specialist diagnostic tools. These are important to identify damp quickly and resolve any issues. You can also conduct in-between inspections yourself, particularly after a long trip. Check for any signs of water leaks or dampness on the walls, ceiling and around windows or doors.

Ventillation:

Just like your home, a motorhome needs proper ventillation. Remember to open windows every now and again to allow for fresh air flow, particularly if your vehicle is in storage and out of use. It’s also advised that while showering you open a window to allow for steam to escape and use an extractor fan when cooking.

Keep it dry:

Now this main sound silly when discussing damp, but it’s important to wipe down surfaces regularly to remove excess moisture. Areas such as your sink or shower can build up water during use, where possible give them a quick wipe down to avoid buildup. We also advise that wet clothes or towels are dried outside to avoid excess humidity in your vehicle.

Address Leaks Promptly:

If at any point you notice a leak or your motorhome seems like it may be damp please getting contact with our service team. Addressing damp promptly will avoid further damage to your vehicle. Damp repairs may just involve a faulty window seal so investigating it professionally is recommended.

Don’t forget that proper maintenance is essential if you want to enjoy your vehicle as long as possible. Preventing damp is always the best course of action, but if you do find tell-tale signs then act quickly. If caught early, solving a damp problem need not be expensive.
